The law in Florida is as follows:

- Any existing public building containing both lodging space and equipment that can produce carbon monoxide (boilers, heaters, etc.) is required to be equipped with approved carbon monoxide detectors integrated into the building’s fire alarm system. On the night of the blaze in question, the family who lived in the house in Hillsboro County was not home. Yet as the blaze produced plenty of smoke that should have sent a signal to the alarm company’s monitoring center, no sensor was activated and no signal sent. The resulting fire extensively damaged the home and most of the owner’s possessions.

An investigation revealed that the alarm system was last tested in 2010. Apparently, the alarm company attempted to get into the home to test and work on the system but were unable to work out arrangements with the homeowner. Reports show the alarm system was working properly at the time of its last test.

Representatives from the Florida Alarm Association told a local television station the problem with the alarm could have been program related. However, there are other possibilities including a power failure. The fact is, no alarm system is perfect — thus the need for regular testing.
